"Colorado, the state of craft beer, is a very exciting place to be for a beer lover," says executive director of the Colorado Brewers Guild John Carlson. He's referring to the breweries that are opening across the state every week. During last year's Great American Beer Festival, Colorado had about 160 breweries. Now it's pushing 200. Here are the new kids on the block, the breweries that have opened since last year's festival that are worthy of a visit during the festivities this year.
Epic Brewing is the newest kid on the block. The Utah-based brewing company opened their 14,000 square foot Denver taproom in RiNo has 25 of their inventive beers on tap, including the newly brewed RiNo Pale Ale and the Big Bad Baptist imperial stout brewed with Novo Coffee beans.
Blackshirt Brewing is an artisan brewery founded by brothers Chad and Branden Miller. These Colorado natives love red ale, and take pride in using Colorado-grown hops.
TRVE Brewery opened last June and has kept people interested with beers like Wanderlust: a Belgo-American Pale Ale. This is a brewery for heavy metal lovers.
The Brettanyomyces-obsessed brewer Chad Yakobson finally tapped the first firkin at Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project's new brewery at The Source. The new location opened to the public on October 4.
Ian Clark of BRU Handbuilt Ales in Boulder is a chef by training and a brewer by craft. His brewery, which he opened out of his garage, is now an eatery that shows off his culinary skills, and provides a space for pairings with his small-batch beers.
Sanitas Brewing is the love child of two friends from Boulder Beer Company and another buddy from Boulder's Redstone Meadery. The new industrial-chic taproom serves Sanitas flagship beers black IPA and saison, and features an outdoor yard game area. Complete with McDevitt Taco Supply's taco cart sold outside daily.
Like most breweries Our Mutual Friend Malt and Brew started amongst friends; hence the title. OMF feels a lot like a comfy living room, board games included, and plays vinyl records. This new Denver addition uses all Colorado-grown barley, and soon plans to malt barley in-house.
This nanobrewery located in Boulder focuses on wood-aging and interesting ingredients.
Owners Jake and Erin Evans grew up camping and hiking, and built the brewery with an outdoor theme in mind.
Black Sky Brewery is another newbie that brings beer and music together. The new business provides the community with a series of on going, informational workshops and events to support the education and awareness of the local brewing and music scene.
The beer is great, and De Steeg gets a little rowdy during the Bronco games. The neighbors are talking about this new football-loving brewery on Tennyson Street.
