Greasy Spoon: The Village Coffee Shop In Boulder

Weekends are for going out and taking comfort in comfortable greasy spoon food. One of the places where such food is available is the The Village Coffeeshop, a longtime staple in Boulder. This popular joint offers greasy breakfast and lunch, sharp, straight-up service with a side of humor (they'll call you out as Village Virgin if it's your first time and you try to order a latte) and albeit a small space, it's cozy and a boisterous environment.

In business for more than 40 years, owners Ryan and Shanna Henkel have been manning the helm for the last 7 years. Located in a strip mall on Folsom and Arapahoe, the small space is less than 1,000 square feet and their motto and shirts read: "890 square feet of reality surrounded by Boulder."

On weekends you're guaranteed to see a myriad of hungover college students and longtime regulars bellied up to the small bar or sitting in the 1950's era booths throughout the wood paneling walls that are lined with CU Buff gear.

The food is always affordable and they open early at 5:30 AM (Sunday opens at 7 AM). Breakfast is served all day up until they close at 3 PM on weekdays and up to 2:30 PM on weekends. All breakfast dishes are $7.50 or less and the portions are generous. The menu provides all the breakfast staples such as crispy hash browns, french toast, omelettes, breakfast burrito, biscuits and gravy and bacon. They also serve lunch offering classics like reubens, chili, tuna melts, onion rings and a french dip sandwich.

Another food piece worth noting is their gluten-free menu where they can substitute pancakes, bread and burger buns without extra charge. A nice touch for a no frills diner.

If you're looking for artisanal, local cuisine - keep on moving. The Village Coffee Shop holds true to its greasy spoon moniker by offering consistent food, that's on your table swiftly and it's filling yet simple. It's not only a classic diner, but an icon in Boulder that has held up against the test of time.
