Agave's Gastronomic Aspirations; Il Mondo Vecchio Crisis

The Boulder Weekly reviewed Agave Mexico Bistro & Tequila House, revealing a surprisingly good option for traditional Mexican food in Boulder. The kitchen at Agave executes traditional dishes well but certainly shows some higher gastronomic aspirations. The menu does not lend itself to big surprises- there are tacos, enchiladas and tamales are readily available. But there are also distinctive offerings such as grilled seafood plates and vegetarian dishes featuring breaded cauliflower or chile-simmered cactus, which is where the higher gastronomic calling shows itself off. The restaurant is comfortable, if not dumbed down by its strip mall location, but arthy and warm appearance, anchored by a towering fireplace. [BW]
