Hair of the Dog: Colorado Beer Cocktails

Photo: Emily Heller

Colorado Craft Beer Week came to a close on Sunday, so it's safe to say that most of us could use a hair of the dog after the shenanigans. And it only seems appropriate that we nurse our beer week hangovers with craft beer. Luckily, several of Colorado's bars and brewpubs are crafting cocktails with the state's best suds. They're honing in on flavors like sweet milk stout, zesty fruit ale, tart sour beer and spicy brown ale to give their cocktail menus a boost.

Here's a guide to Colorado's best beer cocktails:

BOULDER
Rusty Bus Cocktail at West End Tavern
Avery Brewing's Ellie's Brown Ale, Van Gogh Dutch Chocolate Vodka, Luxardo Cherry liqueur.

FORT COLLINS
Sour Long Island at Black Bottle Brewery
Citron vodka, 1800 silver tequila, rum, triple sec, Sprite and Coke, all topped with sour beer.

GPA Cocktail at The Mayor of Old Town
Odell Brewing IPA, London Dry gin, lemon juice, tonic water.

DENVER
TMT cocktail at Ghost Plate and Tap
Dry Dock Brewing Apricot Ale, Absolut Vanilla vodka, Marie Brizard Orange liqueur, Peychaud's bitters, simple syrup, lemon juice.

Naughty Girl Scout at Euclid Hall
Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout, Van Gogh Chocolate Vodka, peppermint schnapps, coffee.

Bartender's Choice at Colt & Gray
Colt & Gray's lead barman Kevin Burke may be a certified sommelier, but beer might just be a little bit closer to his heart. He proudly sports a regularly rotating craft beer tap list at the restaurant's bar, and will jump at the chance to make you a custom beer cocktail. Tell him the flavor profiles you're looking for, such as sweet, smoky, or tart, and he'll whip up a fresh concoction that wont disappoint.
