Berkeley's Taza de Cafe Is Closed for Updates

Changes are coming to the name, space, and menu at this cafe.

The windows are covered in paper at Taza de Cafe, sitting at the northeast corner of West 44th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard in Berkeley, but there's a sign on the door explaining the changes to come.

Operated by Rosemary and Matt Lopez for nearly a decade, Taza de Cafe has been a spot for coffee and espresso, as well as breakfast and lunch items like sandwiches, salads, and even Mexican fare. But those aspects are likely to be different when it reopens as Café 44 in 2015.

The note from the owners explains the space is undergoing a renovation and promises a "fresh new menu" following the transition. No word yet on the specifics, but the adjacent Charlie's Ice Cream Social—also owned by the Lopezes—looks to be part of the project too, with the shop closed up for now.
