Hipsters, Stoners, and a New Record Label: This Is The Early Word on Voodoo Doughnut

The jury, i.e. Denver's food media, has reached an initial verdict on Voodoo Doughnut. Not only is it transforming a normally sane, healthy population into a cultish line of sugar fiends— but for some reason or another, it's deserving of praise, and worth the wait. Voodoo might have its fair share of bells and whistles, they say, however the contents of those pink boxes are objects of desire. This is the early word on Voodoo Doughnut.

The Political News: The Colorado Statesman interviewed Voodoo's owners Tres Shannon and Kenneth Pogson, who said they like the "rough-and-tumble personality of Colfax, which is why they chose the location... Shannon used to live in Denver and still retains a deep love for the area and its culture, which he said resembles Portland, Oregon in its young, edgy population and focus on fitness. 'People that like fitness like doughnuts,' he said..." [Colorado Statesman]

The Fan Review: Andy McDonnell posted about the Tom Brady doughnut on his blog. "The Tom Brady doughnut— with pretzels that customers could stick in the Voodoo Doughnut form of the Patriots' quarterback— is GREAT!" [AMD]

The Hipster-Hater Review: A Cafe Society reader thinks the Voodoo madness is embarrassing, saying, "It's pretty funny to drive down Colfax on a weekend morning and see herds of hipster dipshits lined up and waiting for hours for a box of donuts. The idiots waiting in line actually think of themselves as "cultural creatives" but they are just as herd-like as any other sociological in-group." [Cafe Society]

The Green Review: Denver Business Journal noticed similarities between the lines outside of Voodoo and the lines outside of dispensaries. "Voodoo Doughnut didn't target Denver simply because voters in Colorado legalized adults 21 years or older using and possessing small amounts of marijuana, but it doesn't hurt." [DBJ]

The Rarity Review: A Yelp reviewer thinks Voodoo is good in small doses. "You don't come here everyday for your morning coffee and doughnut. This is the kind of place I want to stop by on a Wednesday afternoon to bring home a surprise... I consider these businesses novelties and not just a destination, but rather an experience." [Yelp]

The Record Review: Colorado Public Radio interviewed Voodoo owners about their newest venture. "In addition to expanding their operations to Denver, Shannon and Pogson are launching a doughnut-themed record label. Voodoo Doughnut Recordings is a label unlike any other: each month, the company will release one 45 vinyl single, shaped and colored like a doughnut and featuring at least one doughnut-themed song." The Superflous, Got-Milk Review: The Clarion criticizes Voodoo's "Americanized spelling of donut, instead opting to embrace a superfluous 'ugh,' and says, "While Voodoo certainly lives up to its mystifying name, donut purists might be deterred by all the fuss. And while the store offers an assortment of beverages, they are lacking the ultimate donut beverage accompaniment: milk." [Clarion]

The Long Line Review: The Shuuk blog analyzes the long lines at Voodoo. "It may seem like bad business but when you walk by two restaurants which one do you want to go into? The crowded one with the line or the empty one? Scarcity, done in the right way can increase your perceived value." [The Shuuk]
