Weird and Wonderful : Past the walk-in freezer at Frozen Matter lies Retrograde, a modern speakeasy that debuted in Uptown this past June and is making a name for itself with its confidently eclectic aesthetic. The slightly chilly room features unique decor like horsehair bar stools that craft an environment "straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey." When combined with the menu's list of experimental cocktails, Retrograde stands out as a spot that's "equal parts fun, glam, off-the-rails crazy and welcoming." [Westword]

An Eager Welcome Wagon: All but one Facebook reviewer rated the speakeasy as a five star addition to the area (the outlier awarded Retrograde four stars). Multiple users praise the fun environment, friendly staff, and inherent coolness of the speakeasy. Thanks to Frozen Matter, Retrograde's visitors can also expect the smells of fresh waffle cones while keeping the drinks flowing. [Facebook]

The Drink News: Users on Yelp applaud the balanced yet potent combinations of the speakeasy's cocktails. Multiple users cite the smooth flavors throughout the menu and some claim that they had "no idea [they] were drinking a double." Though few do acknowledge the higher price point of the drinks, the strength of the cocktails ultimately make them "a delicious steal!" [Yelp]

Recommendations from the Industry: Speaking to 303 Magazine, owners Gerry Kim and Josh Gertzen always aimed to craft  "a more complicated, adult experience with ice cream" at Retrograde. The incorporation of dessert flavor profiles to the cocktail menu has resulted in a myriad of funky fusions. 303 Magazine applauds drinks like the Little Green Ghouls, Buddy!, a twist on a mojito, and the Brooklyn Pacifier, a take on a New York Sour.
