Five Points darling Rosenberg Bagels has been closed since May 2when a fire in the an apartment located upstairs from the deli caused damage to the entire building. The blaze occurred at about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of 27th and Welton streets. Firefighters discovered 29-year-old Shane Richardson's body in what appeared to be a closet in his apartment on the second floor of the building. From the very beginning, completely unrelated to Rosenberg's, there was suspicion of foul play and it was later revealed that Richardson had been shot.
Now, local authorities have arrested a parolee on suspicion of murder, reported the Denver Post yesterday. According to the Denver District Attorney's office, Brian Scott Pattison, 30, is being accused of first-degree murder and first-degree arson. He is also being charged with several counts of possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Authorities believe Richardson was fatally shot sometime in the three days before the fire.
Pattison was last convicted of a felony in 2011. State criminal records further indicate Pattison was last arrested May 4 in Las Animas County. He maintains a lengthy criminal record dating back to 2005 that includes felony convictions, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's criminal background database. The Denver Post discovered Pattison's criminal history and parole status by searching his name and birthdate in the CBI system and then comparing his record with the Colorado Department of Correction's online offender query.
Rosenberg's remains closed and is working on rebuilding. It hosted two big pop-ups in the last two weekend and will continue to do so this weekend. Details are available on its Facebook page.
