Hot Cakes, the unfussy corner spot at 1400 East 18th Avenue, known for its tender sweet potato waffles and meaty or veggie green chile has closed its doors as of this week.
The hum of traffic, construction and emergency action across the street at Exempla St. Joseph Hospital funneled into Hot Cakes for more than a decade, serving up affordable but satisfying breakfast and lunch to the City Park neighborhood, but that is all done now and there is no word on who, if anyone, will take over the space.
According to a neighbor, the closure signage went up this week after Hot Cakes was open and operating over the weekend. She added that Hot Cakes had closed its doors for a handful of days about a month ago following a health code violation.
Mona's, another breakfast spot, also shuttered recently and Pop's Place, which had a big breakfast and brunch component, closed on Monday.
