Copper Door Take Two Opens Just in Time for Cold Snap

The second cafe location lives on First and Santa Fe

Copper Door Coffee Roasters

Address: The Yard, 900 W. First Ave.

After hunting for a pocket of Denver she deemed “underserved” by independent coffeehouses, Hannah Ulbrich settled on a space at The Yard, opening the second location of her Copper Door Coffee Roasters on Monday, Sept. 25.

Nestled between two gyms, Ulbrich required an address that was zoned for manufacturing to expand the coffee production portion of her business. Buying the original operation roughly six years ago years ago from a friend, then-owner Sinjin Eberle, she says she started running Copper Door as a wholesale roaster, sourcing beans directly from coffee growers until three years ago, when she opened the retail cafe in the Montclair neighborhood.

Since, Copper Door has built a number of local relationships with wholesalers such as Marczyk Fine Foods and St. Killian’s Cheese Shop. Now, Ulbrich says she’s looking to “up her game.”

Calling it a “wonky layout,” nearly 75 percent of the bright, spacious new location will be dedicated to wholesale and production. Grey and white patterned tiles decorate the coffee bar and multi-color metal stools tuck beneath. Light wood accents exist in contrast to the exposed, industrial ceiling.

In addition to freshly brewed coffee, Copper Door No. 2 will be using seasonal blends of Spirit whole leaf tea. The same relationships with local bakeries, such as Glazed and Confuzed, will emerge in the Santa Fe space, and Ulbrich is in talks with Maria Empanada for another hearty food option.
