Paying tribute to the midwest, the team behind Rhein Haus will open Wally’s Wisconsin Tavern at 1417 Market St. tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 8. Named for Wisconsinite Wally Weimann, partner James Weimann’s father, Wally’s will provide a cool and casual atmosphere, aiming for a lake cottage look and feel, designed with 1970s wood-paneled walls and vintage family photos framing fond memories of life in middle America.
A bulky, wooden back bar remains from the building’s previous life as the flagship Old Chicago location. Adding to the nonchalant environment, several screens will tune in to Wisconsin Badger, Green Bay Packer, Michigan State Spartan, and other Big 10 and NFC North games ‘round the clock. Meanwhile, classic arcade games such as Golden Tee and Big Buck Hunter will keep customers content and occupied.
In proper Wisconsin tradition, the menu will feature fried cheese curds and a special Wally’s butter burger with a thin beef patty served between a soft, buttered roll topped with pickles and onions. Bratwurst and schnitzel will be regular menu items, while weekly fish fry dinners and “Love Thy Neighbor” nights will pay occasional homage to surrounding states Michigan and Minnesota, highlighting their culinary favorites, including Coney dogs and hot dish casserole.
Eight taps will include microbrews and cult classics, highlighting an assortment of Midwestern suds, such as Destihl and New Holland. For those who prefer a more spirited beverage, a small cocktail list will focus on various iterations of Wisconsin’s official state cocktail, the Old Fashioned.
