Lou’s Italian Specialties Starts Slicing Deli Meats in Denver

And packing subs in the likes of real New Jersey delicatessens

Joshua Pollack, the owner of Rosenberg’s Bagels and Famous Original J’s Pizza, has started serving subs from a new deli space in the Cole neighborhood. Lou’s Italian Specialties will hold its grand opening on Tuesday, December 18. While there’s no space inside the little corner shop to sit and eat chicken parm or Italian beef sandwiches, customers can order them to go, browsing cheese wheels and tasting fresh slices of prosciutto while they wait for them.

Lou’s specializes in hot and cold sub (see also hoagie or grinder) sandwiches, like the Louie with Genoa salami, capicola, provolone, and ham, topped with fixings from shredded lettuce to oil and vinegar. Market sides here include broccoli rabe and pasta salad. To drink, there’s the whole lineup from San Pellegrino, and dessert starts with a selection of hand-filled cannoli.

Pollack recruited two old Jersey friends, Nick Severino and Jason Somers, to lead the new kitchen and help him oversee a growing Bridge & Tunnel restaurant group. Between the bagels, pizza, and now sub shop, the team jokes about its “New Yorking” of Colorado. Luckily, price tags for the most part are closer to old Denver than New York City.

Status: Lou’s Italian Specialties is now open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at 3357 North Downing Street. Find the full menu online.
