Sassafras American Eatery, the breakfast and lunch spot with a Southern menu, closes one of its locations this weekend. The Jefferson Park location bids Denver adieu on Sunday, but fans can sit tight while the restaurant moves to a new location in the Highlands in the next couple of weeks.

The restaurant takes over the former Solitaire space at 3927 W. 32nd Ave. Solitaire closed last August after a three-year run of “elevated” dinners.

That space features two adjoining houses filled with multiple brick-walled dining rooms and surrounded by a sprawling patio. For two decades, Highland’s Garden Cafe occupied the space before Solitaire took over.

Sassafrass launched in Jefferson Park in 2012, then the casual spot expanded to Colfax Avenue in 2014. A third location overlooks Clear Creek and is set across the street from the Golden Hotel.

Fried green tomato Benedicts, pimento chicken biscuits, bananas Foster pain perdu, biscuits and gravy, and chicken fried eggs and buffalo has make up the breakfast menu. Three varieties of shrimp and grits, mac and cheese varieties with pimentos or blackened chicken, and po’boys filled with shrimp, catfish, or oysters round out the menu.
