Through the rest of February, the godfathers of stout month Mountain Sun Brewing in Boulder, is celebrating the 21st anniversary of this month-long ode to stouts with tap takeovers, collaborations with other breweries, and the debut of the winner of the Stout Month 2014 Homebrew Contest at the end of the month.
Mountain Sun and its sister pubs— Boulder's Southern Sun and Under The Sun, and Vine Street Pub in Denver— may be the pioneers of stout month, but over the years a lot of other breweries have caught on, too. Now Stout Month is a state-wide celebration of this dark, malty, and often roasty style of beer.
"Here at Left Hand, our motto is sometimes you're not in the mood for what everyone else is having, and that hits home with our diverse offering including Milk Stout and Milk Stout Nitro," says Left Hand Brewing spokeslady Emily Armstrong. The brewery's milk stout, a sweet stout brewed with milk sugar, is quite possibly the most popular of this style in the state, if not in the county. "If it weren't for the variety these dark and roasty, delicious beers bring, it would be a very bitter world," she adds.
So here are 12 stouts to seek out this month, including Left Hand's infamous milk stout, classics from Mountain Sun, and newer-to-the-market selections from Echo Brewing and Lone Tree Brewery. Without further ado, here's the map.>>
